Though I am shakily and tearfully typing this, I couldn’t be more relieved or proud of myself. I am officially finished with my master’s degree. I can’t believe I made that happen... When I was 17 and became aware of my pregnancy, this is certainly not where I pictured myself 6 years later. I have been sacrificing sleep to a degree that makes me question how I survived for 6 years. I have done what felt absolutely out of the question. I have dove deep into my passions and I have embodied a drive that I don’t ever expect to dim. While a graduate degree might not seem like a big deal to many people, especially in my writing community and the field I am going to enter, I am a first-generation college student. I grew up pretty poor, in a rural town, and had very little interest in furthering my education until my son came into my life. He is more of a motivation to me than he will ever know and I hope that he feels proud of me when we look back on these more difficult times. All in all, I’m glad I didn’t quit all those times I wanted to. I’m glad I overcame my hatred for math for just long enough to meet the requirements. I’m grateful to everyone who believed in me. And am glad to prove those who didn’t wrong. I have kept a 4.0 GPA for 4 years straight and am at a 4.2 this quarter. This was all for my son, yes, but over the years, it has evolved into much more than that. This is for what I was told I’d never be able to do. This is for me. I’m done.
